SkyDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox Which is good | test result of kyDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox
- Dropbox doesn't have an official app for Windows Phones, but Boxfiles works pretty well, making it even more multiplatform.
- SkyDrive doesn't have an app for Android, but HTC integrated natively it in its Sense 4.0. Non-HTC Android users can find third party apps in the Play Store to access their files.
- Google Drive may have only 5GB free, but these don't include the unlimited photos upload to private albums on Google+ using Picasa or an Android phone, the 20,000 songs that can be stored for free in Google Play Music, and the 10GB in Gmail.
- HTC users on Android receive extra 3GB free space if they have a 2011 device with Sense 3.0 or 3.5, and even extra 23GB if they have a 2012 device with Sense 4.0.
- The outsider: Box offers 50GB free space to Android users; unfortunately personal accounts can't use the desktop sync application, which requires a non-free business or enterprise account.
I personallly have 30GB on Dropbox + 25GB on SkyDrive, 50GB on Box and now Google Drive, and all for free! Useful to use different services for different purposes and to keep backups.
SkyDrive vs Google Drive vs Dropbox
Supported Platforms
Dropbox is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, BlackBerry and Android devices. Windows Live SkyDrive is available for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Windows Phone devices while Google Drive is currently available for PC, Mac and Android phones /tablets. All services do offer a web mobile version that can help you access your files from the web browser of any mobile phone.
The other important difference is that Dropbox is also available for Windows XP and Linux while SkyDrive is not.
Storage Limits
Dropbox offers 2-3 GB of free online storage storage, Google Drive offers 5 GB while SkyDrive, if you are new, offers 7 GB of storage space.
You can upload files of any size to Dropbox through the desktop client while that limit is 2 GB in the case of SkyDrive. Both SkyDrive and Dropbox let you upload files up to 300 MB from the web browser while that limit is 10 GB in the case of Google Drive.
Storage Plans
If you are running out of storage space on SkyDrive, you can buy an additional 20 GB for about $10 per year or 50 GB for $25 per year. Dropbox Pro offers 50 GB of storage space for $99 per year while Google Drive offers an extra 20 GB for $2.49 per month.
See detailed comparison of pricing plans.
Built-in File Viewers
Both SkyDrive and Dropbox web apps have built-in file viewers for most common file formats including Office documents, PDFs, videos and images. Google Docs supports even more formats – including Photoshop mockups and AutoCAD drawings – and no wonder that you can also view these files in Google Drive without additional software.
Unfortunately, maybe because of licensing issues, none of these drives will stream MP3 songs in the browser – you will to have download the MP3 file locally to play the audio.
File History
Your free Dropbox account will save any file’s history for 30 days meaning if you accidentally delete or change a file, you can easily restore the previous working version for the next 30 days. SkyDrive and Google Drive also store the previous versions of all files though they have not exactly specified how many reversions are preserved.
If you delete a file or folder inside SkyDrive web app, it’s gone forever whereas in the case of Dropbox and Google Drive, the files are moved to the Trash from where they can be easily restored.
Account Security
Since your Google Drive is connected to your Google Account, you can apply 2-step protection and non-authorized user won’t be able to access your online file even if they are aware of your Google username and password. This extra layer of protection is not available to Dropbox and SkyDrive users.
Google Drive and Dropbox also maintain a detailed log of every single change that was made to your files (or account) but this seems to be missing in SkyDrive.
File Search
This is one area where Google Drive has a definite upper hand.
When you search for a file on Dropbox.com, it returns results where the file names matche your search keywords. SkyDrive lets you search the content of documents that are in common Microsoft Office formats. Google Drive goes a step further as it can even read the text content of scanned documents and photographs using OCR. That is, if you have saved a photograph of the whiteboard to your Google Drive account, you should be able find that image by text without having to remember the filename.
Offline Access
The mobile apps of Dropbox and Google Drive let you save any document or file on your mobile for offline use. Such a facility is not available in the iOS apps of Windows SkyDrive though you can always export the document to another app (like iBooks or Good Reader) from SkyDrive and access it offline.
Selective Sync
If you have multiple computers, all these “online drives” will copy your files across all your machines. Sometimes, you don’t want this to happen and both Dropbox and Google Drive offer you an option to selectively synchronize folders per computer. For instance, you can tell Dropbox not to download your family photographs folder on the work computer. This saves bandwidth and your hard disk stays light too.
Selective Sync is however missing in SkyDrive.
What I like about Windows SkyDrive
SkyDrive offers plenty of storage space but the best part is that the SkyDrive web app lets you access files and folders of all your other computer right from within your browser. You just need to have SkyDrive on these machines and you can then easily access any of their files from any other computer, anywhere simply using your Windows Live ID.
SkyDrive is an absolute must-have service for Microsoft Office users because it gives you the ability to edit documents in the web browser while preserving all the formatting.
What I like about Google Drive
Google Drive offers the most pleasing interface, the search feature is brilliant and the new grid view lets you quickly browse your stored files visually. You can email any file from your Google Drive account to another user as an email attachment, a useful feature that’s missing in all the other online drives.
If you live in the Google ecosystem and do not have Microsoft Office on your computer, skip SkyDrive and go with Google Drive.
What I like about Dropbox
The basic Dropbox account offers a mere 2 GB of storage space but you can easily increase your account space to 16 GB by referring a couple of friends to Dropbox. Also, you can find tons of apps that make the Dropbox service even more powerful and useful.
Google Drive and Windows Live SkyDrive are extremely promising services but none of them support as many platforms as Dropbox does. The best part about Dropbox is that it just works and it won’t be easy even for Google and Microsoft to build the kind of developer ecosystem that currently exists around Dropbox.
Transfer Web Pages and Documents to your Kindle
Send to Kindle installs as a virtual printer on your Windows or Mac and you transfer any web page to your Kindle by simple printing that page using the Kindle printer. The app turns the web page into a PDF and sends it to your Kindle.
Alternatively, if you want to transfer documents to the Kindle, you can select the documents in Windows Explorer (or Finder on the Mac) and choose “Send to Kindle” from the contextual menu. The app can transfer PDFs, images, Word documents and text files.
The same Send to Kindle app can also be used for transferring documents from the desktop to the Kindle app on your Android and iPhone / iPad devices. A must-have for Kindle users.
Gmail Message Sory by Size | Arrange Gmail message by Size | Sort your Gmail Messages by Size using Google Docs
The idea is that your Google Docs will connect to your Gmail account and compute the size of every message that’s present in your mailbox. If it finds a bulky message (size > 1 MB), it will make a note of it in the spreadsheet.
Once the sheet has a list of all the bulky message, you can sort the sheet by the Size column to find the big ones. Or use the Filter option (the Funnel icon) to find messages that are within a particular range (5 MB < size < 10 MB). Click the “View” link to open the corresponding message in Gmail, forward it to a secondary email address and delete it from the primary Inbox to recover space.
That’s all the theory you should know, let’s now put this program into action:
- Create a copy of this sheet in your Google Docs account.
- A new Gmail Menu will appear in the sheet after about a minute. Select “Reset Canvas” from the Gmail menu to initialize your sheet.
- Accept the authorization screen and then choose Grant Access to let Google Docs access your Gmail Inbox. This is completely safe because your own Google Docs account is requesting access to your own Gmail account (see source code).
- Once the permissions have been granted, choose “Scan Mailbox” from the Gmail menu to start the scanning process.
Scan Gmail Messages with a trigger
If your Gmail mailbox is large, you can also set up a time-driven trigger to let the script automatically without manual intervention. In this case, you can even close the browser tab and the script will run in the background. Here’s how:- While the Google sheet is open, go to Tools -> Script Editor. On the next screen, choose Resources -> Current Script Triggers.
- Click “Add a New Trigger,” change the Event from “Spreadsheet” to “Time Driven” and set a minutes timer that triggers every 10 minutes.
- Save the trigger, authorize the script if it requires and close the sheet.
BlackBerry Prices Drop in India | Black Berry Price 2012 In indian | April 2012 Black berry Price in India
A new print campaign in today’s newspapers suggest that Research in Motion (RIM) has dropped the prices of BlackBerry phones in India by as much as 27% making the devices even more affordable.
Contrary to what some may think, BlackBerry is actually a very popular brand in India for two reasons – there’s BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and the devices are generally good value for money. The god of Indian cricket, Sachin Tendulkar, also carries a BlackBerry though it’s a designer edition done by Porsche.
Here’s a chart comparing the new BlackBerry prices with the unofficial market prices.
Old Price (Official) | New Price (Official) | Lowest Price (Market) | |
BlackBerry Curve 9380 | 20,990 | 16,990 (-19%) | 15,125 |
BlackBerry Curve 8520 | 10,990 | 8,990 (-18%) | 8,399 |
BlackBerry Torch 9860 | 29,990 | 21,990 (-27%) | 20,617 |
BlackBerry Curve 9360 | 19,990 | 18,990 (-5%) | 17,862 |
Pair Computers and pen drive | Compare Pen drive & PC files | Sync Files Between Your Computer and External USB Drives
yncToy supports wild-cards in file names (like *.exe or holiday_*.jpg) so you can decide what files are included or excluded during the sync process.
And using SyncToy is completely risk free – it has a wonderful preview feature that lets you see what operations would take place during the run without performing any changes on your computer.
Send Bigger Emails More than 25 MB | Big email attachments more than 25 MB size | Gmail big attachments
If you have been using my Mail Merge scripts in Gmail to send personalized emails to a large group of people, here’s one bit of news that may interest you.
The maximum allowed size of file attachments that you can send through Google Docs (or Google Apps Script) has just been increased from 5 MB to 25 MB per message (see release notes). In other words, you can now send emails with much larger attachments using the same Mail Merge program.
Lock Computer Data | Protect your personal data on computer | hide Data on your Computer
Hide your Data from Prying Eyes
Here are some ways to hide your data on the computer from other people:Put your Sensitive Files in the Cloud
The easiest approach would be that you use a USB Flash Drive to store your confidential files and not the computer’s hard disk. USB disks are inexpensive – you can get a 16 GB disk for less than $10 – and some are so thin that they will easily fit in your wallet like a credit card. The next option is that instead of storing the files on a physical disk, you upload them online to places like Google Docs (1 GB), Windows SkyDrive (25 GB) or Box (5 GB). Dropbox is another good option for online file storage but because the service synchronizes files automatically with your hard drive, you may want to avoid it on a common computer.
Hide Files inside Private (Invisible) Folders
Hide Files using the Stenography Technique
Adding Smileys & Symbols in Windows 8
To get started, press the Windows Key + R shortcut to open the Run box in Windows 8, type the command tabtip and hit Enter. Alternatively, switch to the desktop view in Windows 8 (press the Windows Key), right-click any empty area in the task bar and choose Toolbars -> Touch Keyboard.
Once the Touch Keyboard is visible on your screen, just tap (or click) the Smiley key on the virtual keyboard and the different alphabet keys will be replaced with emoticons. Tap the arrow keys on the keyboard to further navigate to the other screens of emoticons and symbols.
Here’s a little video of the new Touch Keyboard of Windows 8 in action. The is much better than the confusing layout of the Character Map utility that currently ships with Windows
Google SEO Tricke | getting top ranking in google | google SEO website | using meta tags for google
Your website could sport a very professional design but unless that site is not ranking well in search engines, it may be tough for new and potential customers to discover your business on the Internet.
Therefore, when planning to create an online presence for your brick and mortar business, it is extremely important that your site layout and content is optimized for search engines.
If you are wondering why the title says “Google friendly” where there are exist so many other search engines on the Internet (including popular ones like Yahoo!, Ask and MSN), that’s because Google has the reach like no other.
Most website owners would agree that Google alone drives 90-95% of traffic to their websites.
There are basically two ways to drive visitors from Google to your website – one, you buy ads that show up on Google results pages for certain keywords (using AdWord) or two, work hard to get good rankings in search results (organic traffic). While the former method costs money, organic traffic is free but requires effort and understanding of how search engines work.
We’ll focus on techniques and guidelines that will help improve the rank of our web pages in organic search results. And though we mention only Google, the techniques do apply to all other search engines as well. Let’s get started:
Always write clean and descriptive titles – When people scan (nobody reads word by word) the different results on a search page, that first thing that will catch their attention is the title of your web page. Similarly, if X is looking for “yellow bananas” on Google, web pages that contain this term in the title are likely to rank higher. A good title could look something like “Yellow Bananas | Green Grocery Store”
Construct keyword rich URLs – Like Titles, search engines always favor web pages that contain relevant keywords in the URLs of the web page. Continuing with our previous “yellow bananas” example, a URL like abc.com/products/fresh-yellow-bananas.htm or abc.cm/products/yellow-bananas.htm will always perform better than something like abc.com/products?id=232 or abc.com/products/232.html
Use Meta Tags – Meta tags (keywords & descriptions) were important in the good old AltaVista days but not anymore since they were so easy to abuse and search engines devised better algorithms to rank web pages. However, good descriptions in Meta tags can really help bring search traffic because they appear as short snippets in search pages beneath your page title. If a meta tag is missing, Google could display some other text page from the web page that may not always be very relevant.
Win Incoming Links – Other than quality content and a good site structure, incoming links from other websites are also essential for your site to rank high in search engines. And the best way to get those links is to write content that’s informative and adds value. For instance, not many people may know but bananas can be used to remove scratches from old CD and DVD disks. Such tips can easily go viral in the web community and may win you lot of incoming links.
Google Sitemaps – You can also consider creating a sitemap of your website and submit that to Google Webmaster Central – the advantage here is that Google will be able to discover and index some web pages on your site that exist but enjoy no link love and hence search bots cannot discover them during regular crawling.
Text, Text, Text – Web page elements like Flash animations, images and videos clips could make your site look very attractive but the problem is that all search engines can only read text. If you avoid using text, search engines will never know the actual context of web pages and that will affect your rankings.
Underground SEO practices – Do not participate in link exchange programs and never buy links with the purpose of inflating your PageRank. Also, avoid stuffing irrelevant keywords in your web pages as all these “SEO tricks” may lead to penalties or even a site being removed entirely from the Google index.
Duplicate Content – Always make sure that all pages on your website have unique content. When you serve two or more pages with similar content to search engines, they will have trouble deciding which page should rank higher than the other and it could therefore dilute your search rankings.
Google phone in India | Google reliance phones | Google and reliance tieup for android phones | google 3g phone in india | Android Phones in India to
A TOI report says that all Google Android phones sold in India will come bundled with a Reliance 3G connection with 1 GB of free data for the first six months.
This offer goes into effect on April 14 and will be applicable for Android phones from Samsung, Sony, HTC and LG (there’s no Motorola in that list).
The report seems to indicate that the Reliance-Google deal is applicable to “all Android phones sold in India” but more likely it is about 3G handsets sold through Reliance. The rcom.co.in website doesn’t say anything about this new partnership.
Set Bing Images as your Desktop Wallpaper | Bing Images as wallpapers | Bing Wallpapers
The Bing homepage features a new image every day and there’s a new utility in town called Bing Desktop that will download and set these images as your desktop background automatically. Thus, if there’s a new image adorning the Bing website, your desktop wallpaper should change as well.
Bing Desktop is however more than just a wallpaper changing application. The real purpose of the app is to provide you instant access to Bing without having to launch the web browser.
Press the Windows Key + H keyboard shortcut and the Bing search box will pop-up right in the center of your screen. It can auto-complete your search queries – just like the search box on the Bing website – and hitting Enter will show the search results in your default browser.
Tracking GMail sender location | How to Find the Sender’s Location in Gmail | IP address of email Sender & location | Find Gmail Location Sender Ip ad
When John sends an email message to Elizabeth, the IP address of the sender (John’s computer) is included in the header of the outgoing email message. The receiver (Elizabeth) can then perform a simple geo-lookup against that IP address to find the approximate geographic location of the message sender.
Both Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail include IP addresses in outgoing message headers but if John is sending an email address using Gmail, or Gmail for Google Apps, his IP address won’t be included in the message.
IP addresses can be considered sensitive information. As such, Gmail may hide sender IP address information from outgoing mail headers in some circumstances.
If the IP address of John is not available, because he is sending email using Gmail, how can Elizabeth determine John’s geographic location? There two options:
Gmail doesn’t include the IP address of the sender when the sender is using Gmail’s web interface to send email. However if he or she is using a desktop client (like Microsoft Outlook) or a mobile device to send that email, the IP address is often included in the outgoing message.
Open the message in Gmail, click on More –> Show Original and search for the line “Received: from “ – it may have the IP address of the sender that you can map to a physical location with the help of Wolfram Alpha.
Option B: Find the Sender’s Time Zone
When the IP address is not available, you can determine the sender’s very-approximate location from the time-zone of the originating computer. Go your Gmail Labs page and enable the “Sender Time Zone” feature.
Now open any message in Gmail and click on the down arrow that says “Show details”. The message will display the the current time in the sender’s time zone as shown in the following screenshot.
Next you can use this timezone map to determine countries where the current time is the same as the time displayed in the Gmail message. Obviously this not the most foolproof method as two different countries can be in the same time zone but when the IP address is not available in Gmail, this is the closest you can get.
On a related note, the time zone of your outgoing Gmail messages is determined from your computer’s time zone. If you would like your Gmail messages to show a different time zone, just go to your computer’s data and time settings and change the time zone.
Track current location of indian rail | indian train online current status tracking | Track your Train’s Location on the Indian Railways Website
The Indian Railways operates nearly 11,000 trains everyday and you can use their website – trainenquiry.com – to know the current running status of any train. You can either enter the the name of the train, or the train number if you remember it, and the system will tell you whether that particular train is delayed or running on time.
That’s good to know but where exactly is your train?
CRIS, the IT wing of Indian Railways, is beta testing an improved and clutter-free version of the Train Enquiry website that is far more useful than the existing one. The new website will not only provide the running status of trains but will also help you track the exact location of trains across the country.
There are plenty of new features to appreciate about the new website. You no longer have to remember train numbers – just enter any two station names (like Delhi to Hyderabad) and it will bring all the trains available on that route. The Indian Railways website is using AJAX probably for the first time and thus you get search results as you type which is very handy.
Once you spot your train in the search results, you can learn about the train’s departure time at the previous two stations that the train has crossed, how far are the next two stations on the route and what’s the expected time of arrival at these stops. All these details will help you better plan your visit to the station.
The new website should go live in the next few weeks but if you would like to try it right now, go trainenquiry.com/searchtrain.aspx and choose the New Look option. It’s still in beta so you may encounter a few bugs but great effort overall.
using Wikipedia offline | download Wikipedia contents | The Best Tools for Taking Wikipedia Offline | Wikipedia as application
Download Wikipedia Articles for Offline Reading
Wikipedia, the world’s largest encyclopedia, provides database dumps of all their wikis that one can download for free and thus access the entire Wikipedia content on computers that are not connected to the Internet.
The database dumps are frequently updated and include every single article that’s available on the main Wikipedia website. The dumps are available as .xml.bz2 files that you can easily open on your computer using the free and portable WikiTaxi software.
WikiTaxi ships with an importer that will first un-compress the Wikipedia database files (.bz2) and then converts them into a .taxi file format. Now you open these .taxi files inside WikiTaxi just like the way you open .doc files inside Microsoft Word. If you are running low on space, the original Wikipedia dumps can be safely discarded.
A good alternative to WikiTaxi is Kiwix – this is also free software and available for Mac, Windows and Linux systems. You need to install the Kiwix software on your computer and then download one of the Wikipedia editions – the articles are packaged as .zim files that will open directly inside Kiwix without requiring any conversion.
The latest .zim package for various editions of Wikipedia can be downloaded from kiwix.org using any download manager or you can use this .torrent file to download using any BitTorrent client. This is 9.7 GB file and includes all the text of Wikipedia pages but no images.
Kiwix is definitely easier to use than WikiTaxi and the packaged .zim files can read across all popular platforms but the downside is that, unlike the database dumps used by WikiTaxi, the .zim files aren’t very frequently updated. Also, the zim package for English Wikipedia doesn’t include every article though the packages for other languages are complete*.
If you have an iOS device – like the iPhone, iPad or iPad Touch – you may grab the excellent Wiki Offline app and carry all the Wikipedia articles in your pocket. The app renders Wikipedia articles in a beautiful interface and supports tabbed browsing so you can open multiple articles side by side. Wiki Offline is also available in the Mac App Store for your Mac OS X.
The other option for using Wikipedia offline is WikiReader – this is a 3.5” monochrome device with a capacitive touch screen and contains over 3 million Wikipedia articles. The updates to Wikipedia articles are released every quarter – you can update the device by connecting it to your computer – or you opt to receive updates on SD cards.
The WikiReader device costs $99 and though I haven’t tried it myself, it did get a huge thumbs-up from Ars Technica. You definitely don’t need this if you carry a smart phone that is always connected to the Internet but could be a good reference tool for the rest of us with an impressive battery life – much like the Kindle.
Finally, if all you want to do is download a handful of Wikipedia articles for offline reading, use the built-in book creator that turns multiple pages from Wikipedia into a PDF book.
Google Plus Profiles Get Cover Photos | Setting Cover photo on google plus | Google Plus Welcome page photo | changing Cover page photo to google plus
The one big difference is that can now add a cover photo to your profile page on Google Plus similar to Facebook. And if you have applied some clever hacks – like animated GIFs – to your existing profile pages, there’s no reason to worry as you still have an option to stick to the older layout which has five thumbnails in a row.
The recommended dimensions are:
- Profile Picture – 250×250 pixels
- Cover Photo – 940×180 pixels
- Thumbnail Photos – 110×110 pixels
The following video has more details on how you can customize the profile page of your Google Plus account. Also, this slide has more detailed information on the layout and dimensions of profile photos.
Flipkart MP3 Store Available as an Android App | Flipkar.com Online MP3 Songs | Download MP3 From Flipkart
Online shopping site Flipkart has released a new Android App to help you buy MP3 music directly on your Android mobile phone.
The app has an integrated MP3 player and the best part is that you can download any of the purchased songs right inside the app for offline listening. The songs sold on Flipkart are DRM free and thus you can also use other music apps on your phone to play tracks downloaded through the Flipkart app – you can find these MP3 files in the “flyte” folder of your SD card.
You also need to have sufficient balance in your Flipkart Wallet as that’s the only payment mechanism available for buying music on your phone.
Improve SEO with PDF Files | PDF files SEO
The text and links inside PDF documents are indexed by Google (just like HTML files) and often rank high in search results so PDF files may be a good source of traffic to your website. Google OCR can read text inside images as well.

To get your PDF indexed in Google simply link to it from one or more pages that already indexed.
For better PDF rankings: Pay special attention to the headline in a PDF as Google always includes snippets from the PDF and puts the words and phrases of the query in bold. Also make sure that you PDF has a proper Document Title similar to the Title tag on a Web Page.
